Agadir Oufella was established in 1540 by the Saadian sultan Mohammed ech-Cheikh to control the strikes of the Portuguese. Settled in 1470, the latter established a fort on the coast near Ain Fonty and set up a tower to monitor it. This prompted the Saadians to build the kasbah on top of the same mountain. This strategic location allowed the bombardment of Portuguese installations with artillery in 1541, subsequently liberating the Portuguese fortress called "Santa Cruz do Cabo de Gué" and thus the importance of the fort declined until Abdallah el- Ghalib rebuilds it.
